A Day at the Ship Channel

Posted in Birds, Daily musings, Photography with tags , , , , on January 20, 2009 by Ed

Well the zoo was put on hold till today. Yesterday was a free day at the zoo and I hate crowds, so I went to the Ship channel in search of some birds to photograph and as luck would have it I found a few and some ships too boot. So today is zoo day and a stroll around Herman park. As I sit here across from the zoo something over there is making quite a racket, the Helicopters going to Herman Memorial hospital are pretty much the only sounds here except the radio softly playing NPR in the background. Well, wish me luck today will be a busy or relaxing day depending on how you look at it.
Also I want to wish my mom aka. TellicoLady all the best today, she is going into the hospital this morning for a hip replacement. I can’t wait for her to finish rehab so she can hike on the river without being in pain.
Love ya mom!!!

downtown-houston-texas-1-19-09O.K. I have to admit I took a chance on this pic. I was on my way this morning to the zoo and decided to try a pic of the Downtown skyline. It was 3:30am and since traffic was light I pulled over on the onramp to 59 south and set the 4 ways on the truck, grabbed the camera and tri-pod ( a must for night shooting) and quickly set up. As some traffic passed by I could feel the highway move and vibrate, I was at least 100 feet above the Buffalo Bayou. I did a quick check on the settings on the camera and set up and started shooting I did’nt push my luck and only shot about 20 pics and jumped back in the truck and got moving before some pesky police officer happened by. Well I’m sitting in the zoo parking lot and just finished checking out the pics and well, I’m impressed with the results. Later this morning it will be a full day of zoo pics, and Herman park pics…I can’t wait
Shot info: aperature priority mode, ISO 200, 4 seconds, F:4, tripod mounted.

Braindead

Posted in Daily musings, Photography, wildlife with tags on January 16, 2009 by Ed

siberian-tigerI have to admit after the last week of snowstorms and slow freight I’m spent and need to go braindead for a few days. No worring about freight, cold, snow, traffic, ect… I really have nothing to say today but as I’m writing this I keep finding things to plink down on my trusty laptop. I’m in Jackson Mississippi this morning and I can’t say I miss the frigid temps up north, it is 20 degrees here and the locals are whining about the cold, which to them I guess it is. ( wait one, I have a lot lizard banging on my door), O.K. disease averted, back to the post. I hope my next load gets me closer to Houston, that would be a nice place to take a few days off, but I’ll keep going till the time is right. Why Houston? Well first, my Aunt lives there, I think. The other thing I like is the Houston Zoo and Herman park, I could spend hours there just shooting pics of animals and the park. Not to mention the duck pond, the pidgeons and the small rodents that love popcorn. Now that I write this I really hope I can get a couple of days there.
Till then enjoy this pic of a Siberian tiger, one of two at the zoo.

Cades Cove: The Buildings

Posted in Daily musings, Photography with tags on January 15, 2009 by Ed

O.K. almost done. In this post I’m showing some of the buildings of Cades Cove including some cabins, the grist mill, cantelever barns and the baptist church. All the buildings were constructed in the 1800’s. All in all I really like this place and it will always be a special place to me.
Hope ya’ll enjoyed this, later..Ed

Cades Cove: Landscapes

Posted in Daily musings, Photography on January 14, 2009 by Ed

The cove is nestled in the mountains of eastern Tennessee, besides the wildlife I also have a passion for landscape photography, and the cove delivers. Sweeping mountain ranges, green pastures, and streams, its a kind of paradise. I’ve selected some pics of the area I really like from last March and April. I hav’nt been back since then, but I plan a trip there soon.
Tomorrow…Wordless Wenesday, I’ll find something interesting, I hope… :-)
Hava great day…Ed

Cades Cove: Wildlife

Posted in Daily musings, Photography, wildlife with tags , , , , , on January 13, 2009 by Ed

After posting the church interior pic yesterday I decided to dedicate this week to Cades Cove national park near Townsend Tennessee. Today I’m highlighting some of the local animals that can be found in the cove. The most prevelant are the deer, they are everywhere! I have a ton of deer pics, some wandering, scratching, eating, jumping, and just plain having fun. There are Black Bears also I managed a couple of pics at a distance and it seems like everyone had better pics than me..Oh Well. The other thing I love to stalk and take pics of are birds and I’ve got pretty good at it. There were loads of turkeys both toms and hens, alot of Bluebirds and Eastern Meadowlarks, Red bellied woodpeckers, and Pilated woodpeckers and of course Crows were everywhere. I can’t wait for spring for my next trip and day long photorama.
Tomorrow I think I’ll do a scenery/landscape post then the buildings/cabins of the cove to finish off the week.
Later…Ed
